Chain Gang

Walking over the top of the stockade fencing was OK during the blizzard when Cocoa couldn't get back in her doghouse, but it's not acceptable any other time. She KNOWS she's not supposed to leave the backyard. Leaving the yard was not acceptable when we lived downstate, and it wasn't acceptable this afternoon when Steve caught her in the act.

We saw some of her tracks on the driveway in the fresh snow this morning. That was upsetting, but we knew we needed to catch her outside of the fence to reinforce the lesson. It didn't take long. Cocoa was halfway down the block when Steve arrived home from a short errand today. That little escape has earned her a good scolding and some time on the chain gang. It's unfortunate, but necessary, as we love her and certainly don't want her to get hit by a car.

Yes, Cocoa, head down. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Don't worry. The chain is attached to her pink collar. Her collar isn't tight, and she has plenty of length to move around back and forth in the area in front of her doghouse. We'll leave her on the chain gang for the next week, then see how she does with some freedom again. Hopefully, we'll also have some warmer temps soon. That should help to melt enough snow to make it impossible for her to get back over the fence.

In the meantime, click on the following link to hear her new theme song:

All is well in the Keweenaw.

  1. She was probably going to the Old School Bakery to get you guys some cookies for a snack later. She knew this could be her last chance with that settle & squish thing going on she might not get over the fence.. Now don't you feel bad? Of course there is the possibility she met someone at the Copperdog 150 and was about to elope. To think she didn't even say good-by.

  2. Hah! Good possibilities, but she knows we don't go to the bakery at this time of year. I don't think she would elope; she's too much of a daddy's girl. Her nose always gets her into trouble. She loves sniffing out new territory. Little Houdini actually got out of her straightjacket the first night. Yes, we hope we get some more settling & squishing (or melting) soon. That will take care of the problem.
