Feelin' Patriotic 2 - Checkered Flag

I'm continuing my series on our simple patriotic decor today. You know how some projects just seem to come to you on the spur of the moment? This was one of those projects.

When we were down in Saginaw at the end of March/beginning of April, we stopped at Dollar Daze on Gratiot Road. As I was looking through the store, I spotted these basket tray liners.

You're probably used to seeing this paper sitting under french fries, as these are the lining papers they put in baskets at some restaurants. I've also seen them used to wrap messy sandwiches. Anyway, I got the idea of using Mod Podge (Dollar Tree) to cover a birdhouse we already had. I'll show you that birdhouse project next week. Since I had never actually used Mod Podge before (I know. . . I'm probably one of the few people in America who hadn't already used it.), I decided to practice on a 5x7 canvas (in my craft stash) before attempting the birdhouse.

I was going to use either the blue or the red to completely cover the canvas and then stencil "1776" on top of it. When I was trying to decide which paper to choose for the background, the thought of a checkered flag suddenly popped into my brain instead. I cut out the blue square first - trimming the corner to fold over the edge of the canvas. I then cut out the red and trimmed 3 corners to fold over the edges.

Break out the Mod Podge! I started with the blue corner - painting on a thin layer of Mod Podge with a foam brush - and then adhered the blue checkered paper. After that, I moved on to the red. When everything was in place, I allowed it to dry a bit. I then painted a thin layer of Mod Podge over the entire top and sides of the canvas.

I applied a second coat after the first coat was thoroughly dry.

You can still see the texture of the canvas.

This project adds another little touch of patriotism to our summer decor, but the flag hasn't settled in one specific location yet.

It may continue to move around the house as the summer progresses.

There you have it - my checkered flag - without a Nascar track anywhere near here!

I'll be back next week with Feelin' Patriotic 3.

All is well in the Keweenaw.

  3. What a cute idea. Very clever of you to just cut off a piece of the red and use it for the top. Can we think of it as modern art?
