Sneak Peek Friday

Most of you probably remember that Steve is going to make our kitchen cabinets out of the black walnut from some of our trees in Saginaw. He is swamped with work on the house right now - trying to get it "done enough" to move into before the snow starts flying. He really doesn't want to rush through the kitchen cabinet project, so we made the decision to purchase some unfinished cabinets to use in the kitchen for the time being. He can work on the black walnut replacements after the other major work is done in the house, and we'll then move the temporary cabinets and countertops to the basement for a craft/work area.

The unfinished oak cabinets were on sale at Menards in Marquette, so we hopped into the red truck and headed in that direction on Tuesday, August 26th.

The sky was blue when we left the house, but it was changing before we even made it out of Calumet.

The forecast called for clearing skies with no rain, so we forged ahead.

Any trip through the town of L'Anse obviously requires a quick stop at the Hilltop to grab some muffins and/or cookies for the road. We called it brunch.

The weather forecast proved true, and the sky cleared before we arrived in Marquette.

Steve also needed to get more electrical supplies, conduit and wood for the decking on the front porch. Plus, we picked up some inexpensive countertop they had in stock. When we pulled up to "Door 11" at the rear of Menards and saw the pile of items we purchased, I really doubted we could get everything into the truck. The guy who was there to help us load the items also doubted. Steve, however, had complete faith that everything would fit. He was right!

These pictures were taken when we stopped for fast food on the way home. I wish I had taken a photo of the interior cab of the truck. I packed that area pretty tightly with many of the smaller items.

We purchased unfinished base cabinets only. I can get by with that since we have a pantry in the laundry room. Open shelving instead of upper cabinets is very popular in kitchen design at the moment, and I can always add a few of those if necessary - just trying to keep things simple and fast for Steve right now. I just noticed that the countertop in that photo looks like the one we purchased. I'm going to paint the cabinets a creamy white, which is what I'll want them to be when they're moved to the basement. Here's a better peek at the style - just simple unfinished cabinets - nothing fancy.
